Recording a Google Slides Presentation

Google Slides just added a great new feature that allows you or your students to record a presentation including your voice and your webcam! Canva had this feature last year, but for those who prefer to work in Google Slides, it is now available there. In any Google Slides presentation, look for the Record button in the top right, just below the "Share" button:
When you click that and give the browser permission to access the camera and microphone, you will be taken to a screen that shows your presentation with a small insert of your webcam and some buttons below it:
Here's what all the buttons do:
Open Speaker Notes | |
Switch slides | |
Change location of the webcam picture-in-picture (PIP)
Change size of the webcam picture-in-picture (PIP)
Volume meter (should be moving if you are speaking)
Enable or mute microphone
Record and stop | |
Activate or disable camera (when off, there will be no webcam picture-in-picture, you will only see the presentation)
Audio and video settings (change camera or microphone input) |
When you finish recording, you have the option to watch it back, re-record it, or save it directly to your Drive (in a folder it creates called "Slides recordings").
I know my World Language teachers are excited about this as an option for having students record themselves speaking in the target language. It could also be a great way for students to practice before giving a presentation in front of the class or as an alternative presentation option. It is not as sophisticated as Canva or WeVideo and does not have any annotation abilities, but it is quick and easy to use for simple recordings. As always, if you have any questions or a great idea on how to use this feature, let me know!
